Reflections of a Student-Athlete: What I Did Right and Wrong, 7 Years Later

As a student-athlete at Virginia Tech, I had the honor of competing in NCAA Division 1, being named an ALL AMERICA, and captaining the football program in my senior year. This journey left me with valuable experiences and some lessons I regret, but also achievements I'm proud of. In this blog, I want to share my reflections and offer recommendations for those in a similar position.

Lessons Learned:

Not Using All Available Resources: As a student-athlete, I had access to a variety of resources, from academic tutors to wellness advisors. Not fully utilizing these resources was a mistake. Many of these services are specifically designed to help athletes balance their responsibilities and improve their performance in both areas.

Taking the Opportunity and Place for Granted: Virginia Tech and the NCAA offer an incredible platform for personal and professional development. However, at times, I did not fully appreciate this unique opportunity. I underestimated the impact it could have on my future and did not value the environment and connections as much as I should have.

Not Managing My Mental Health Better: The pressure to maintain high performance in both academics and sports can be overwhelming. I did not pay enough attention to my mental health, which at times affected my performance and overall well-being. Recognizing the importance of mental health and seeking support when necessary is crucial.

Neglecting My Nutrition and Sleep: Amidst the daily hustle, I neglected my eating and sleeping habits. Nutrition and rest are fundamental for both sports and academic performance. Not giving these aspects the necessary importance can have long-term negative consequences.

What I Did Right:

Responsibility in the Classroom and in Sports: I always strived to fulfill my academic and athletic responsibilities. Discipline and commitment are essential for achieving success in both fields.

Respect and Punctuality: Maintaining a respectful attitude and being punctual were principles that guided me. These values not only helped me earn the respect of my peers and coaches but also established a solid foundation for my personal development.

Consistency and Being a Good Teammate: Consistency is key. I never missed my training sessions or classes and always tried to be a good teammate in both settings. Supporting and collaborating with others creates a positive and productive environment.

Staying Active During Summers: During summer vacations, I made sure to stay in shape and continue training. This allowed me to return each season in optimal physical and mental condition.

Giving 100%: In everything I did, I always gave my maximum effort. This mindset is fundamental to achieving success and making the most of the opportunities that arise.
