The Crucial Role of Parents in a Student Athlete's Success: A Guide for Families

Our company Propella, with which we have helped almost 300 families so that their children study and play sports in institutions abroad, has seen first-hand how crucial parental support is in this process. Active participation and support in key decisions are factors that, when met, are enormously beneficial to the success of student-athletes. On the other hand, when these elements are missing or insufficient, the experience tends to be much more challenging for both the student and the family.

The Importance of Emotional Support

Parental emotional support is essential for student-athletes to cope with the pressure of balancing studies and high-level sport. The burden of meeting good grades, demanding training and competitions can be overwhelming, and the emotional support that parents provide plays a key role in helping young people manage stress and maintain motivation. Without this support, students may feel overwhelmed, which affects their academic and athletic performance. Additionally, at Propella we recommend sports psychology as a valuable tool to strengthen mental resilience and help students overcome the challenges they face.

Understand the goals of the student athlete

It is essential that parents understand their children's goals as student-athletes and work together with them to achieve them. Success in this process depends not only on talent or athletic skills, but also on making informed decisions about the best academic and athletic opportunities. When parents and students work together, they can align their goals, ensuring that decisions made benefit both athletic and academic development, which is key to a successful and balanced trajectory.

Support in Key Decisions

The path of a student-athlete is filled with important decisions: choosing which college to apply to, what programs to pursue, how to balance sports and studies. One of the biggest challenges parents of student athletes face is accepting and understanding the decisions their children make throughout their career. Throughout my path as an athlete and student, I made decisions that were sometimes not easy to understand from the outside.

Understanding that student-athletes are developing not only their athletic skills, but also their ability to make critical decisions, is critical for parents. My parents, although initially hesitant about some of my decisions, realized that each one was an important step on my path to independence. Not all decisions gave the expected results, but my parents' support, even through mistakes, helped me learn valuable lessons.

It is important for parents to find a balance between offering guidance and allowing their children to make their own decisions. In the end, understanding your children's decisions does not mean always agreeing, but it does mean being willing to support and guide them, helping them reflect and grow at each stage of the process.

The Role of Parents in Financial Education

One aspect that is often overlooked is the financial one. Parents play a crucial role in planning and managing the costs associated with being a student-athlete. One of my mistakes when I started my career as a student athlete was not having a clear notion and reality of my family's budget.  This factor is truly important so that the student-athlete can align expectations and objectives. Encouraging clear communication about finances not only helps students better understand their financial situation, but also allows them to make informed and responsible decisions in their academic and athletic careers.

The Transition to Independence

One of the biggest challenges student-athletes face is the transition to independence. For this stage to be successful, it is essential that parents prepare the ground adequately. This involves providing the necessary support while allowing your children to learn to solve problems on their own. Fostering resilience and the ability to make independent decisions is crucial for young people's personal and academic development.

The Role in Motivation

Celebrating every achievement, big or small, is critical to student-athlete motivation. Recognition from parents is vital to keeping morale high and ensuring they stay focused on their goals.

It's easy to fall into the cliché of only expecting the big wins, but it's crucial to recognize the small successes as well. From doing better on required exams to receiving praise in a new highlights video, every step forward counts. Completing every minute of a game, showing effort in every practice, or even maintaining a positive attitude during a difficult season are accomplishments worth celebrating. Recognizing these moments not only builds student-athletes' confidence, but also reminds them that every small step forward brings them closer to their larger goals.

The Balance between Support and Autonomy

One of the biggest challenges for parents of student athletes is finding the balance between providing support and allowing autonomy. It is important for parents to be able to understand when to intervene and when to let the student-athlete figure things out. This balance is crucial to the development of a student-athlete.

The Value of Constant Communication

Distance can be a challenge when a student-athlete is away from home, but maintaining open communication is vital. Constant communication helps students feel supported by their parents, even if they are not physically nearby. Knowing they have a strong support system gives them the confidence to face any challenges that arise.

Encouraging regular dialogue allows parents to stay aware of their children's achievements and concerns, as well as offer guidance and emotional support. This type of connection helps students better adapt to their new environment, manage stress, and remember that they can always count on their families, no matter the distance.

Seek external support

In the life of a student-athlete, it is sometimes necessary to seek outside support to supplement the guidance that parents provide. Although family support is essential, it is not always easy to manage certain issues between parents and children. At such times, having a third party, such as specialized companies such as Propella or sports psychology services, can make a big difference.

Outside help offers an objective and professional perspective, helping students address emotional and sporting challenges effectively. We have seen that this intervention can be crucial when failures are detected in any of the important aspects for the well-being of the student-athlete. Whether it's to improve academic performance, manage stress, or boost motivation, seeking external support can be a valuable tool on the path to success.

It's a shared effort

The success of a student-athlete is truly a shared effort. Each achievement, each challenge overcome, is the result of the dedication and commitment of the entire family. Parents play a crucial role in not only their children's sporting and academic development, but also in their personal and emotional growth. This journey is full of ups and downs, and unconditional parental support can be the difference between success and disappointment.

By working together and supporting each other, parents and their children can build a strong foundation that will allow them to face any challenges that arise along the way. This shared effort not only leads the student-athlete to achieve their goals, but also strengthens family bonds and creates lasting memories.

The path of a student-athlete is filled with challenges and triumphs, and parental support is an essential component to their success. From providing emotional support and making key decisions, to encouraging independence and constant communication, the role of parents goes beyond simple accompaniment. At Propella, we have seen how this shared effort can make a difference in the personal, academic and athletic development of each student-athlete. In the end, success is not only measured in medals or scholarships, but in the overall growth and lasting memories created as a family.
